Advice for Future 110-er's
So there are some certain things to do in this class to insure success. The first one is actually do your work. Write the essays, read the assignments, and class goes smoother and is more enjoyable for everyone. Try and keep discussions going for as long as possible. You get more out of it that way, and you might not end up hearing a lecture on abastolic succession... or something along those lines. Not to say that's not interesting... but it won't necessarily improve your English writing skills or analyzing skills. Choose a topic that you want to write on. You can find one. You have to be interested in at least one thing. If you say no... well I'm sorry, that must really suck. But most of all, just take it easy, don't fret, try and get things done early, and the course is smooth sailing. Hope this helps.

I agree with keeping the discussion going in class. Good advice. And it would help when writing an eight page paper to pick a topic your mildly interested in.
ReplyDeleteReally good advice! I agree when you say to keep the discussions going for as long as possible becase then the class will become more interesting. You're right when you say "it is really important to chose a topic that you are interested in" because otherwise writing the paper will not be enjoyable and difficult to write.
ReplyDeleteYou are definitely right that people should keep the discussion going in class! It gets really frustrating when there are lulls of silence because no one has any commentary on the readings and everyone just zones out.It would be a lot more interesting to hear more than just the same few opinions.
ReplyDeleteSterling, I think you give really good advice! The people who would read this wouldn't be worried and I think you were right about keeping an interest in something. I'm glad that you warned them to come prepared for discussions, that can always be something we can work on too! I liked your post!
ReplyDeleteGood Call. Discussions definately keep class entertaining. Obviously stay on top of work. I really like your point about staying relaxed though. People just need to step back, and take a few breaths once and a while.
ReplyDeleteYou bring up alot of good points especially the classroom discussions, I hate that awkward silence. When everybody is involved it really furthers the class.
ReplyDeleteYeah, totally agree with picking good sources and getting things done early. I would have gone crazy if I hadn't liked my sources, and it's easy to forget about deadlines until they are staring you in the face so keeping up on your work is a must.
ReplyDeleteI think that doing the reading is really important in a class with so many discussions like in English. There are many times when the only thing that matters is our opinion and that is what needs to be said. I also think picking a topic that you like is important because you will get sick of it if it's not interesting to you.
ReplyDeleteYou've touched on a lot of interesting points here, though I would've liked to see you explore them a little further. I do like your jibe at people who might be too quick to say they can't find anything that interests them. Also, just fyi, it's spelled "apostolic."
